Essential Oil Vs Fragrance Oil

We come across various types of aromas in our daily lives; after all, Who doesn’t find themselves swooning over a favorite fragrance? We've all walked away from a candle, perfume, or potpourri and thought, "I want some more of that." Having a pleasant aroma in the air adds a lot to our surroundings and gives a sense of relaxation.

The two dominating types of aroma oils in stores are essential oils and fragrance oils. You would be thinking ‘Isn’t essential oil and fragrance oil the same thing? ‘After all, it’s just an oil infused with fragrance, right? And the answer is no! Although both have their place in the world of personal care products and fragrances, they are very different.

While both these oils have similarities, their differences lie primarily in the way they are produced, their suitability, and their versatility.

 

Essential Oil

Essential oil are naturally sourced oils extracted from plants and hence have all-natural components. A few familiar essential oils are; Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Eucalyptus.

Versatility:

Essential oils have a variety of benefits, from skincare to stress relief. You can inhale them, either directly out of the bottle or by using a diffuser or humidifier. They often are potent and need to mix with  a carrier oil to be used in other applications.

Suitable for:

They can be used in scented candles, household cleaners, room sprays, air fresheners, vaporizers, cosmetics, detergents, perfumes, soaps, etc. Some essential oils are even added to food.

 

Fragrance oil

Fragrance oils are synthetic fragrances designed to mimic natural scents or have unique scents of their own. They have a longer shelf life than essential oils.

Versatility:

Fragrance oils are very versatile; they can be used on pulse points on the neck, wrists, inner elbow, body and hair for a quick refresher. They can also be used on certain fabrics.

Suitable for:

Fragrance Oils contribute pleasant scents to products and often conjure positive memories or trigger positive associations with their scents.  They also revive your spirits while being used as a fragrance enhancer in many skin care products. It is important to look at the carrier oils in fragrance oil products as they play a role in the quality of what you are getting and uses.
